A recent decision in the Alberta Court of Appeal has increased the circumstances in which a director of a corporation may be held liable for the tortious acts of the corporation. In Hall v Stewart, 2019 ABCA 98, a director of a corporation who supervised the installation of a temporary staircase was found to be personally liable for the acts of the corporation in negligently installing the staircase.

The 2020 Federal Budget: What can we expect?

The Government of Canada’s new financial year begins on April 1st and by convention, the public gets to see the government’s budget mid-March. There are two circumstances that are likely to set this budget apart. First, it’s the first budget on the heels of an election victory, an election in which spending promises were made. Second, it’s the budget of a minority government, so to keep from falling, the government will want to keep the NDP on side.

HGA Insurance: What to do when you've been in a car accident

Slicker roads can significantly increase the occurrence of car accidents. We should all be familiar with the steps to follow after an accident occurs:

1. If you are physically able, move the vehicle to a safe location.
2. Call the police if damages are severe, and an ambulance if there are injuries.
3. Check the conditions of the other drivers and passengers. If injuries are severe, do your best to stabilize their condition until help arrives.

4. If you are not in need of urgent medical attention, take detailed photos of the scene and the damage to all vehicles involved.
5. Document the following: contact information for all parties (including witnesses), date/time and location of accident, insurance company and policy number for any third parties, license plate number and description of vehicle, name and license number of each driver, and a diagram of the accident scene.
6. Contact your insurer to file a claim and receive further direction.
