HGA Law: Changes to Matrimonial Property

On January 1, 2020, significant changes are coming with respect to matrimonial property.

Currently, the legislation only applies to married couples and provides rules for how property is to be distributed when a marriage ends. The new legislation will still govern how property is to be distributed if the relationship breaks down, but has now been extended to include adult interdependent partners. It also protects couples’ rights and freedoms with respect to contracts which will govern the distribution of property should the relationship end.
